Miriam Castro Murillo, Production

Miriam Rodriguez with her children Starrie and Ronnie Castro.
Miriam Castro Murillo was born in Honduras and has two sisters and a brother. Since childhood, she has been fun-loving and spontaneous but a hard worker. Though she studied business administration in Honduras, in 1997, Miriam immigrated to the United States in search of a better life.

In that pursuit, she held a variety of jobs including working in an underwear factory and as a bank teller in New York. In 2005, she moved with her mother and two children to the Raleigh-Durham area, where she worked as part of the airport cleaning staff, as a cashier at Golden Corral, and at a pawn shop. Along the way, she finished her GED and started studied English.

In order spend more time with her family and seeking better opportunities – "in all aspects," as she puts it – Miriam pursued a job with Counter Culture Coffee, where she currently works in production. She now has more time for her mother her two children, as well as time to return to studying English in an academic setting.

In addition to studying English and spending time with her family, Miriam enjoys reading, writing, and computer classes, as well as dancing, painting, and designing her own clothes.

I miss my brothers, my childhood friends, and local folk festivals. In the US, I have the freedom and confidence to walk around town without fear of something happening to me. I lived in New York for several years and now live in North Carolina and enjoy life more here with my kids and my mom. And, I can provide a better life here for my family than in my country, economically speaking.
