Amalia Aguilar was born in El Negrito, Yoro, Honduras, in a large catholic family – with five brothers and four sisters. She studied business administration at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras in El Progreso. And, when she was 18, Amalia moved to San Pedro Sula – the largest city in Honduras – to work so that she could contribute financially to her family ... but then an opportunity arose for her to travel to the U.S.

Amalia has been in the U.S. for 5 years and previously worked in Honduran restaurants before starting at Counter Culture Coffee in 2008. Amalia enjoys her job and hopes to achieve all of her goals through her work here at Counter Culture! She lives in Durham and has four children, two of whom live in Honduras.

Q: What coffee are you currently drinking?

Valle del Santuario from San Ignacio, Peru, and Espresso Toscano.

Q: Choose your favorite coffee and brewing method.

My favorite is Espresso Toscano on my home auto-machine.

Q: Who at Counter Culture Coffee would you most like to arm-wrestle, and why?

With Miriam because, if I won, she wouldn't be mad.

Q: What is your favorite book?

The Bible.

Q: What keeps you busy outside of work?

My children!

Q: Share an interesting fact you've learned about coffee while working at Counter Culture Coffee and name the person from whom you learned it.

I've learned to know the variety and quality of each type of coffee, and I learned it from Kim.

Q: When you were 8 years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a teacher but for a variety of reasons, I had to stop studying business administration.

Q: If you could beam yourself anywhere in the world for your lunch break, where would you go and what would you eat?

I'd like to go to Honduras and eat pollo frito con tajadas.

Q: Amalia, we understand that your children are your passion outside of work. Please tell us their names and ages and one unique thing about each.

Eduardo is 12 is a little shy. Jorge is 9, and he's very playful. Ashley is 3 years old and is a bit sneaky. Michelle is 4 months old and is very quiet and tiema.

Q: In addition to your children, we've hear you like to go dancing. Where do you go dancing most and what are some of your all-time favorite dancing songs?

I like to dance bachata and punta at Ambis 1 Nightclub in Raleigh.
