A Reason to Celebrate the Fifth of June in May
5-18-12

Our Coffee Department works tirelessly to seek out new, exciting coffees from around the world. And, occasionally, they find us. We first tasted coffee from Cinco de Junio in Las Sabanas, Nicaragua, in 2009, when a graduate student working with the Fabretto Children’s Foundation in the region sent us an unexpectedly delicious sample from one of the producers in the co-op. We visited Las Sabanas for the first time in October of that year, and have been deeply involved in helping the co-op to build infrastructure to improve quality ever since. This lot comes from small, organic members of Cinco de Junio.
This year, Cinco de Junio is mild, nutty, and, of course, delightful, backed up by cleaner, crisper flavors than in years past. Initially, in the fragrance, crisp apple and toffee mingle with a light, pleasant nutty characteristic. In the flavor, more crisp apple emerges, supported by an elegant sweetness than follows through to the finish. The body is medium-light but perfectly balanced with the mild nuttiness and more complex notes that we are especially fond of this year.
Thanks,
Nathan
