2012 Regional Barista and Brewers Competitions
2-12-12

Lindsey Kiser of Peregrine Espresso in Washington, DC, earned the first place spot at this weekend's Southeast Regional Barista Competition in Atlanta with an excellent and thoughtful presentation (that included our Baroida Single-Origin Espresso). Second and third place went to Trevor Corlett of DC's MadCap Coffee and Michael Harwood from Carrboro Coffee in Carrboro, NC.
Matthew Ludwikowski from Atlanta's Octane Coffee won the 2012 Southeast Regional Brewers Cup. Our own Jonathan Bonchak and Bryan Duggan finished second and third with meticulously prepared of versions of Haru (Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia) and Karatu (Thika, Kenya) respectively.
Congratulations to all of the competitors for their dedication to their craft and their coffee, and thanks to the SERBC/USBC, Barista Guild, judges, volunteers, and event sponsors. Thanks, as well, to Sprudge for their thorough coverage of the event!
Sincerely,
Nathan
The World Barista Championship and World Brewers Cup promote excellence in coffee while advancing the barista profession by bringing together coffee fans and professionals for annual championship events that culminate local and regional events around the globe. Regional U.S. events started a few weeks ago and include both the espresso-based barista competition, as well as the Brewers Cup, which was introduced last year with a focus on handcrafted brewing methods.
In addition to some very talented and dedicated folks from Counter Culture, baristas from some of our favorite shops are competing this year. The US Barista Championship (USBC) site features live web streaming of regional events.
February 24-26: Northeast Regional Barista Competition (New York)
March 8-11: Southwest Regional Barista Competition (Santa Cruz, CA)
Dates for the South Central and North Central Regional Barista Competitions should be available soon at the US Barista Championship site.
Nathan
