What we’re doing at this year’s Specialty Coffee Expo

In addition to opening our new Seattle Training Center, we’ll be giving talks at this year’s Specialty Coffee Expo hosted by the Specialty Coffee Association in Seattle. Here’s an overview of where we’ll be, what we’re doing, and how you can be involved!

Friday, April 20

9–10 a.m. | Getu Bekele and Tim Hill | Ethiopian Coffee Varieties
Counter Culture coffee experts Tim Hill and Getu Bekele will be on a panel discussion about bringing more understanding to the misunderstood coffee varieties of Ethiopia and East Africa, and how the “variety landscape” came to be the way it is. They will also be presenting new information from World Coffee Research, based on a new reference guide to Ethiopian varieties published by Counter Culture.

9–10:15 a.m. | Emily Davis | Making Specialty Coffee Work for Women
Counter Culture’s education manager will take part in a panel lead by Grounds for Empowerment, an organization out of Emory University that provides business trainings and education to female coffee producers. They’ll be discussing collaborative incubator models to help specialty coffee farmers reach their full potential.

9–10:15 a.m. | Meredith Taylor | The Carbon Footprint of Coffee
Counter Culture’s sustainability manager will take part in a panel discussion about how carbon emissions throughout the coffee supply chain are measured and explore ways to mitigate footprints through the creation of carbon credits in coffee-growing regions. We will talk about Counter Culture’s history with carbon footprint measurement and buying offsets.

10:30–11:45 a.m. | Katie Carguilo | Mentorship in Coffee
Counter Culture’s West Coast coffee expert will take part in a panel discussion that will explore how to create mentoring relationships in coffee, how they can be mutually beneficial, and how to prevent them from doing more harm than good.

12:30–2:30 p.m. | Diego Castro | Marco Booth
Counter Culture’s tech services manager, Diego Castro, will be serving coffee with our partners from Jubala Coffee at the Marco booth.

Saturday, April 21

9–10 a.m. | Tim Hill | Yeast Strains and Coffee
Counter Culture head coffee buyer Tim Hill will talk about his recent trip to France and the relationship between yeast and the future of coffee.

10:30–11:45 a.m. | Meredith Taylor | Climate Change Adaptation
Meredith with host and curate this lecture about the different tools that can be used to help coffee farmers with climate change adaptation. Counter Culture has been involved with the creation of two of these tools: the SCA climate change resource library and the workshop toolkit we developed with Twin Trading.

12:45–2:45 p.m. | Emily Davis | Baratza Booth
Emily will be serving coffee at the Baratza booth.

Sunday, April 22

9–11 a.m. | Counter Culture & Friends | La Marzocco Booth
Members of Counter Culture and some of our wholesale partners will be serving coffee at the La Marzocco booth.
