Nelson Melo and his wife Liliana Pabón are longtime leaders among the producers of our La Golondrina coffee from Cauca, Colombia. On their organic farm, Finca Las Acacias, they lead by example. The coffee they produce is not only one of the best organic coffees we buy, but one of the best coffees we buy, period. It is complex with a crisp, clean acidity with notes of delicate tropical fruits and a cane-sugar sweetness.
We were introduced to Nelson Melo and Orgánica in 2007, at which point the coffee-growing association was still establishing itself as a viable organization and was only able to produce small amounts of coffee. The growers of Orgánica had all belonged to larger, regional cooperatives before joining the association in hopes of finding recognition for their high-quality coffee and more accountability from the organization.
Nelson and his wife, Liliana, both of whom have backgrounds in organizing, galvanized a handful of growers to sell coffee to our export partners, Caravela, for the first time in 2005, and over the next few years, membership and overall production grew steadily.
In late 2009, leaf rust struck Colombia and reduced Orgánica's output by 75 percent. The association lost more than 50 of its 120 members in the few years that followed, but the core remained strong—particularly in the Guayabal community where Counter Culture has the longest history—and gradually the group regained members who reestablished their farms. Through all this, Nelson and Liliana have consistently produce spectacular coffees on their farm, Finca Las Acacias, and inspire the farmers of La Golondrina to continue striving for the highest quality.
New This Year:
We worked with the importer and exporter of coffee from Nelson to experiment with trying to capture some of the densest small beans from the coffee that often gets separated out and not sold at a premium. We found that these small yet dense coffee beans often were the best in quality. A win win for the farmer and for Counter Culture.
