Pennsylvania-region technician Ben Guiles may seem to keep a relatively low profile with his quiet demeanor and sly smile, but whenever he’s walking around his home base of Philadelphia, he inevitably hears a few shouts of, “Hey! It’s my favorite barista!” from satisfied customers. Formerly propped up behind the espresso machine at Lovers & Madmen, Ben joined Team Counter Culture after falling in love with the Espresso Rustico he spent countless shifts dialing in, tasting, and serving. His love affair with coffee itself, however, started when he was intoxicated by the jasminey scent of coffee blossoms in Uganda several years ago.

A hands-on kind of guy even outside the coffee world, Ben can usually be found tinkering with one thing or another: Whether it’s tuning his guitar, building himself a new amplifier, or shopping around for welding classes, he’s not really happy unless he’s getting his palms dirty. Ben lives alone with his bike collection in West Philly, though he’s hoping to add a wet nose and wagging tail to the brood as soon as possible.
