Derrick started off in coffee working as a barista for Krankies Coffee in Winston Salem, NC, where he worked for three years. He then made his way to Charleston, SC, where he became the Manager of Quality Control and Training for Kudue Coffee and Craft Beer. While he was there, he also ran a monthly latte art competition for the coffee shops in the Charleston area and had an article published in Charleston Magazine about his latte art.

Derrick lives in downtown Charleston with his wife, Maeve, and three children, Blaise, Posie, and Hesper. They love to have people over and are known to host dinners of 60+ people in their small apartment and backyard, proving that hospitality has no correlation to the size of the space. He also enjoys watching soccer, including local games of the Charleston Battery.
