New York City technician Erin McCarthy has been in specialty coffee since 2004, and has gotten his hands dirty in many aspects of the industry: He’s pulled innumerable shots behind an espresso bar, been up to his elbows in beans as a wholesale roaster, and trained an army of passionate professional baristas before picking up his tool bag for Counter Culture. Since Erin is one of six siblings (with 13 nieces and nephews), he knows a thing or two about interpersonal relations and the importance of clear communication – which is part of what makes him such a great ambassador for specialty coffee.

He lives near a whole rabble of other local baristas in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and usually has his nose in a book (or two, or three) or his hands on a violin or guitar when he’s coming down from the day’s caffeine high.

Erin is the reighing 2013 World Brewers Cup Champion, the first American to win the title!
