Coffee is a family tradition at Guchienda estate. Esther Wanjiku Kamau and her sons, Edwin and Benson Mati, have turned this third-generation farm into an award-winning producer of exceptional coffee. This lot is sweet and bright with notes of blackberry and nectarine––reminiscent of summer’s ripest fruits.

Pronunciation: goo-chee-EN-dah

For three generations, the Guchienda family has cultivated coffee on the slopes of Mt. Kenya, a legacy that began in the early 1950s, when the elders of the Embu community allocated a 12-acre parcel of land to founder Elikana Njiru Guchienda. Elikana planted the estate's first coffee trees alongside subsistence crops. His son, Stephen, and daughter-in-law, Esther, later oversaw a major expansion of the farm, planting most of the SL-28 variety trees that grow on the land today.

For years, the estate sold coffee cherries to a local cooperative union, which processed them with coffee from other farms into large bulk lots that sold through Kenya's national auction system. In 1997, the second generation of the Guchienda family invested in their own processing equipment—allowing them to retain more of the coffee's value on the farm by handling post-harvest processing themselves.

After graduating from Kenya's top universities, Elikana's grandsons, Edwin and Benson Mati, returned to Guchienda to invest their time and talents in the family estate. Together, they brought new energy to the farm and a drive to improve quality. This third generation expanded the farm further, raised quality standards, and built direct relationships with international buyers.

A defining milestone came in 2019, when Guchienda Estate won the Taste of Harvest competition hosted by the African Fine Coffees Association (AFCA). It was a well-deserved recognition of the quality they'd worked so hard to achieve. The win connected them with quality-focused buyers worldwide, and demand for their coffee has grown since. Thankfully, as long-term partners, we are lucky to receive a portion of their harvest each season, and we’re excited to share it with our customers again.
