berry | brown sugar | creamy

Roast Level

light roast

High in the hills of Mount Elgon, a coffee-farming community works in near isolation, transporting each sack of coffee on foot or by bike along rugged roads. Where other exporters saw impossibility, Mountain Harvest saw potential: farmers willing to try new things and invest in their future. With support from a Counter Culture Seeds grant, they built a community-run processing station that has given rise to one of the best coffees we’ve tasted in the country, Mabono Honey. Expect notes of berry, brown sugar, and a creamy body.

Pronunciation: mah-BOH-noh

The remote community of Mabono has long stood apart from the bustling trade that makes Uganda the world’s third-largest coffee exporter. With the only road in and out eroded to near impassability, every sack of coffee—and every supply—must be transported by foot or bike.

While most buyers viewed partnering with farmers in the area as not worth the effort, our partner, Mountain Harvest, saw something different: a group of farmers willing to work, eager to improve quality, and ready to take a risk for a greater reward.

With support from a Counter Culture Seeds grant, Mountain Harvest helped the community establish its first community-managed processing station. Staff, interns, and local producers now work side by side, applying rigorous quality protocols that consistently yield exceptional results.

The outcome is one of the most exciting coffees we’ve ever tasted from Uganda: Mabono Honey. The complexity of the coffee reflects both the sweetness of its process and the journey of the people who made it possible
