Tucked high in the hills of Mount Elgon, Uganda, the community of Mabono has long stood apart from the bustling trade that makes Uganda the world’s third largest coffee producer. With the only road eroded to near impassability, every sack of coffee—and every supply—must be carried by foot or bike.
While most buyers viewed the region as unreachable, our partner, Mountain Harvest, saw something different: a group of farmers willing to adapt, eager to improve quality, and ready to take a risk for a greater reward.
With support from a Counter Culture Seeds grant, Mountain Harvest helped the community establish its first community-managed processing station. Staff, interns, and local producers now work side by side, applying rigorous quality protocols that consistently yield exceptional results.
The outcome is the most exciting coffee we’ve ever tasted from Uganda: Mabono Honey. The complexity of the coffee reflects both the sweetness of its process and the journey of the farmers who made it possible.
