2024 Seeds Fund Recipient

Origin Coffee Lab has been awarded a 2024 Seeds Grant to install solar dryers on smallholders’ farms in Colasay. These solar dryers are designed to enhance the consistency and quality of coffee by reducing defects caused by high rainfall during the harvest months. Currently, excessive moisture leads to significant quality losses, forcing producers to sell their coffee at low prices on the commercial market. The implementation of solar dryers will mitigate these issues, resulting in higher quality coffee and better prices for farmers.

Improving drying systems has been a recurring recommendation in Origin Coffee Lab’s internal inspections, which aim to identify opportunities to enhance outcomes for farmers. This initiative aligns with OCL's commitment to fostering sustainable practices and boosting the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

Counter Culture Coffee collects $0.01 from every pound of coffee sold to fund our Seeds program. Annually, $1 per pound of our winter coffee blend, Iridescent, goes to further increase our contribution. Seeds offers financial grants to producers and producer organizations we work with to implement sustainability projects they identify as beneficial. To date, we’ve allocated over $450,000 to Seeds projects.
