Born and raised among coffee plantations, Max Pérez was acutely aware of the risks and potential within the coffee industry. Driven to “make the coffee dreams come true,” he and his wife, Claudia, founded Finca La Hermosa in 2010. Situated on the slopes of the Acatenango volcano, the coffee farm benefits from fertile volcanic soils that nurture a diverse range of coffee varieties, including the Gesha, Caturra & Catuai showcased here. This coffee exhibits flavors of apricot and kiwi balanced with milk chocolate sweetness.

Max Perez, a fifth-generation coffee farmer from Huehuetenango, and his wife, Claudia, embody resourcefulness and vision. In 2010, they left law school to start Finca La Hermosa on abandoned land with no water or electricity, raising two children while building their operation from the ground up. From the start, they’ve prioritized long-term sustainablility over short-term gains, investing in renovation and infrastructure to responsibly scale for future generations.

What began as resourcefulness has evolved into a deep appreciation for what they have, and commitment to sustaining their community and their land. Even through volatile markets, rising cost of organic inputs, and labor shortages, Max and Claudia remain committed to sustainable practices and express gratitude for those who have contributed to their farm’s success.

Their dedication has been rewarded: the farm is renowned for producing excellent coffees, including several Cup of Excellence winners. Today, the farm boasts a wet mill, poultry coops, and a family home. Beyond their impressive coffee, the family’s humble character inspire ongoing support.
We first experienced coffee from Finca La Hermosa in late 2022 through importing partner Ryan Chipman of Collaborative Origins Imports. Inspired by Max and Claudia’s values, Ryan introduced us, and we quickly saw the potential for a meaningful partnership.

While most of the coffee we buy from Finca La Hermosa anchors year-round products such as Fast Forward and Big Trouble, the farm has much more to offer: delicious coffee varieties like Pink Bourbon and an entire “Gesha Forest,” and a multitude of processing techniques.

This year, we’re proud to showcase this innovation by select one of the best washed coffees from their Gesha Forest–bright and floral–and blending it with a clean, chocolate-tasting lot of Caturra and Catuai. The result is a hallmark coffee from Finca La Hermosa that reflects Max and Claudia’s unwavering dedication to excellence.
