Community Composting

2023 Bloom Fund Recipient

2023 Bloom Fund Recipient

Larema Coffee House received a Counter Culture Coffee Bloom fund to realize their vision of a community composting project to reduce food waste, improve local soil biodiversity, and educate the public about the benefits of composting.

Instead of the trash can, Larema customers and employees will have access to designated containers for throwing out organic material like coffee grounds and food scraps. Once a bucket is filled, anyone in the community can take it home to use in their own gardens or the scraps will be placed into large compost tumblers at Larema to be processed. Any additional food scraps not picked up by customers for home gardens will be collected by Lake Valley Farms.

A launch event will be held to pass out bins of food waste and provide a composting process demonstration. The bucket swap program will ultimately serve and benefit many hundreds of people in the community. By drastically reducing the waste put in the trash stream every day and providing the community with viable food waste to improve soil and plants, this project not only reduces carbon emissions but also strengthens the community.

Bloom Fund

Counter Culture Coffee collects $0.01 from every pound of coffee sold to fund our Bloom program. Annually, $1 per pound of our spring coffee blend, Perennial, goes to further increase our contribution. Bloom provides grants to support sustainability initiatives at Counter Culture Coffee partner cafes. Rooted in the belief that everyone’s path toward sustainability looks a little different, this program supports projects of all shapes and sizes our partners identify as impactful.
