Repurposing and using coffee grounds/organic materials to create products

2024 Bloom Fund Recipient

BEEPUBLIC in Brooklyn, NY was awarded a BLOOM grant to support a unique project born from nature and waste. The café is taking an innovative approach to sustainability by using organic ingredients and recycling used coffee grounds and food waste to create new, eco-friendly products. The project focuses on crafting apparel and household/beauty items, such as soaps, by repurposing waste materials into useful and beautiful creations.

One key example is the use of used coffee grounds and food waste to naturally dye fibers for apparel. By mordanting and dyeing natural fibers with these ingredients, BEEPUBLIC creates vibrant colors that can be further transformed with a ferrous sulfate (iron) solution, producing a range of unique hues. Additionally, the café is making hand-made soaps using organic in-house oils and recycled coffee grounds, offering an exfoliating and beautifying product. This project not only reduces waste but also showcases the potential of nature to create sustainable, functional products for the community.

Bloom Fund

Counter Culture Coffee collects $0.01 from every pound of coffee sold to fund our Bloom program. Annually, $1 per pound of our spring coffee blend, Perennial, goes to further increase our contribution. Bloom provides grants to support sustainability initiatives at Counter Culture Coffee partner cafes. Rooted in the belief that everyone’s path toward sustainability looks a little different, this program supports projects of all shapes and sizes our partners identify as impactful.
