Story

Field Trip is a celebration of all of the knowledge sharing that happens from farm—where coffee is grown—to cup, when it is poured. At the start of the coffee supply chain, our coffee team has the opportunity to learn from our partners at origin when visiting the countries and farms where we purchase coffee.

We learn about the challenges of producing high quality coffee in each particular location and what projects farmers are mounting—like disease prevention strategies and processing experiments—to increase quality and production. We share with farmers what happens to their coffees once they arrive at our warehouse and how consumers experience their coffees, both in Year Round products and Single Origin offerings. Together we learn about how our supply chains function, the boring-but-crucial aspects like when we each pay and are paid for coffee and who finances that delay in the meantime. We cup together to calibrate on quality and best practice physical standards.

The pursuit of coffee excellence is propelled by learning. From the onset of our brand, having a space to open up to partners, friends, home consumers, and new coffee lovers has been incredibly important to us. With 14 Training Centers across the country, we teach our wholesale partners and internal staff about topics like basic coffee botany, palate development, brewing science, latte art, and everything in between. In 2018 alone, our Educators spent over 3,000 hours teaching our Professional Development labs.

While the Professional Development curriculum focuses on pushing potential behind the coffee bar, we are also committed to the broader coffee-driven audience. With our ProDev Series, Catalog Cuppings, Tastings at Ten, and Coffee at Home courses, our Training Centers are a place for anyone who is curious about coffee to join us in learning.

This year, we are excited to introduce our wholesale partners to Bridge, our online learning platform. Baristas will have the opportunity to jumpstart their Professional Development by learning everything from Brewing Science to Barista Fundamentals online to fortify their hands-on training. With Bridge, baristas can move at their own pace and make the most of these opportunities for practical training whether behind the coffee bar or at the Training Center.

Later this year, we be introducing our Coffee at Home program online as well. Stay tuned as we continue to evolve our offerings to be the most cutting-edge and accessible coffee education program in the world.
