Buziraguhindwa Natural Sundried

Kayanza, Burundi

$18.25 | 12 oz bag

This coffee is produced by Ramadhan Salum and his team, who work with hundreds of farmers in the village of Buziraguhindwa. In partnership with Counter Culture, in 2011, Ramadhan made the first-ever special-preparation natural sundried coffee in Burundi as an experiment. After falling in love with the results, we sold the first small production lot in 2013. Today, Ramadhan continues to lead the way in Burundi, making natural sundried coffees with refined-yet-big fruit flavors. Look for notes of raspberry, strawberry, and date.

Story

In 2011, Counter Culture worked with Ramadhan Salum and the team at Buziraguhindwa to create a single kilogram of special preparation natural sundried coffee. This was the first time anyone at Buziraguhindwa—and the first specialty focused natural we know of ever been made in Burundi. At the time, natural sundried coffees were considered inferior and even prohibited, with no export category for this type of coffee in the country. Not being discouraged by the infrastructure or the first test failure, in 2012 we went back to the drawing board and methodically tried again.

That resulting one-kilogram test sample in 2012 is still remembered by our staff and customers as one of the most-impressive natural sundried coffees they tasted at the time, which spurred us to work with Ramadhan in 2013 to create and export the very-first special preparation lot of Burundi natural sundried coffee- not just for Buziraguhindwa—but for the country. Now after years of buying, this coffee continues to set the bar for great natural processing for us, and we use it as an example around the world.
